Its not so much the caliber (Over a 38) but the ammunition.  Just my opinion but anything over a 380 with Magsafe ammo and its dead.

Depending on the weather I carry my Glock-30 in .45 ACP with Glock-21 magazines. In hot weather I drop back to my Glock-26 in 9mm with Glock-17 magazines. Either one gives you a butt load of rounds since I always carry two spare magazines for each. In REALLY HOT weather I carry my Ruger LCP in .380 loaded with Georgia arms ammo(they use Speer Gold Dot bullets) or Black Hills ammo. Not a whole lot of gun but up close and personal the little .380 can do some damage with either loads. I have C/T laser grips on all three and on the .45 and 9mm the laser sticks out just far enough that I can carry appendix style without a holster since the laser keeps the pistol from dropping down below the top of my pants. BTW in Texas I'm pretty sure that the Texas Department of Public Safety ( just a fancy way of saying "Highway Patrol") now carries the Glock in .357 Sig as their designated pistol so if it's good enough for them it couldn't be to shabby of a round.  Smiley

All of my serious carry handguns are Glock 9mms and S&W J frame .38s.

We issue and carry Glock 9mms on my job, so I have a 17 on duty, a 19 off-duty, and a G26 sometimes as a BUG.

My S&W 642 or 638 are for BUG and/or off-duty carry.

The .38Special and 9mm work just fine with good ammo and good hits, everything works poorly with badly placed hits.

I use 124gr +P Gold Dots at work, Ranger-T and/or Gold Dots off duty.  I most definitely stay away from "magic" bullets like MagSafe or Glasers.

This is a good read and reference on the issue of ammunition and caliber choice;

Being a new-B, I would just like to put out here that I recently purchased a S&W .40VE Sigma and installed the CT Laser Guard's (a very sweet setup Wink). For home protection I'm using the Winchester Bonded PDX1, 180 GR., JHP&at the shooting range I've used the Remington UMC .40 S&W 180 GR. Being new to semi-automatic hand guns I'm still learning the ropes, so I hope to try some different target ammo in the future. I give the CT Laser Guards a 5-star rating. Have a good day & stay safe.
