Thank you Howard!  You are all over that forum!  Thanks for all your support!

Have a great weekend!

Crystal

Thanks.

That's because, other than job hunting, the CT forum, the LCP forum and the M&P forum, I have no life. Roll Eyes

Need some advice on best use of LG-431. Even while dry-firing, I seem to lose sufficient pressure on the switch to keep the laser on.  Of course, the frequency of loosing the pressure to keep it on is exaggerated when I am firing live. In trying to observe things while dry-firing, the problem occurs whether I am pressing the switch with the crease between joints or using the padding in between. My fingers are not unusually fat.  Sad

Do you have any suggestions on technique or is the pressure required to engage the switch you use just too much for a weakling like me.  Grin I initially thought it was just me, but some others have reported similar problems in discussions on the LCP forum.

I'll second what Howard said. Under recoil I lose the laser on the LCP.

By modifying my grip to use what I refer to as my "gorilla grip" I'm getting positive activation of the laser now, but I still lose the laser once the gun starts to recoil. I know the Ruger doesn't leave much real estate to work with, but maybe increasing the size of the activation button would help alleviate some of that.

I've mentioned it elsewhere, but I, too, have a problem keeping the laser on under some circumstances. Some kind of tape switch that covers more of the front strap would solve the problem.

I mentioned this on the LCP forum but it strikes me that a mention here may reach some folks that post will not:

I use a modified grip with my LCP that helps give positive activation when using the little pistol. Instead of the traditional thumbs forward grip, I bring my thumb back around to behind the base of my strong-side thumb. The front of my weak hand then wraps around my strong hand with my left index finger sitting over the top of my right middle finger...which rides on the button of the CT module. When I "pinch" my left hand it drives my right hand middle finger right into the laser activation button, which activates the unit and shines the dot. Because the LCP rides high in the hand the slide doesn't whack your weak thumb. The extra pressure you can put on the grip helps get the weapon back on target faster and minimizes recoil and shifting under recoil. Even if the weapon does shift under recoil by simply "pinching" my left thumb and index finger I get the laser right back.

I still lose the dot under recoil with this "gorilla grip" but it does help in positively activating the laser from the draw and during recovery from the last shot. Jerry Miculeck mentioned this grip on an episode of Shooting USA when talking about grip on small revolvers and I decided to give it a try with my J frames. It worked so well that I thought I'd try it on the LCP and it seems to work well for me on the LCP as well.

I typically shoot the LCP one handed. I practice with both hands. Originally, I did not feel that the recoil was excessive and it did not hurt my hands. Since adding the Crimson Trace LaserGuard, it does hurt a bit. I believe it is because I squeeze it harder to keep the laser on. It may also be due to the additional stiffness that might be created by the addition of the LaserGuard. I am not enough of a mechanical engineer or sufficiently familiar with the materials used to know the extent of this effect, if there is in fact any at all.

Do the designers have any thoughts on this?

I own (2) LCPs personally.  I found no difference with or without laser, thumbs forward or thumbs wrapped.  It didn't really recoil excessively for me, but I have relatively small hands (40th-50th percentile maybe).  I have heard that people with larger hands tend to feel the recoil more.

An additional thing for to try is the replacement magazine butt pad that has a hook on it.  I suspect this will help with a number of issues:

I managed to get my hands on a couple and they are very nice.

I own laser grips for my Ruger SP-101 and my Taurus 94.The only complaints I have so far are that there is no "click" when changing windage and elevation to lock in the changes and that one of the screws backed out of my Taurus' grip panel under CCI Velocitor recoil.(the .357's are as tight as the day I installed them.go figure)
I look forward to when the revolver models are offered in digital camouflage so we revolver users can be just as tactical as the autoloader guys and gals.
